How to Get Rid of Thorn Bushes: A Comprehensive Guide

get rid of thorn bushes

Thorn bushes are shrubs that can that can spring up in gardens or fields and often grow quite large. Their long, sharp thorns can sometimes make removal tricky, and less experienced gardeners might not know where to start.

If you’re struggling to clear them from your yard, here are a few proven methods to try. The one thing I want to emphasize beforehand is to always be safe, always use protection, and be very careful when you do this kind of job in your garden.

How to get rid of thorn bushes

Thorn bushes can be removed from your property in several different ways. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. Follow the one you are most comfortable with and the one that best suits your situation.

Pulling them up by the roots

This is probably the most effective way to remove them, but it can also be the most difficult.

You will need to dig around the bush’s base to loosen the roots and pull it out. Depending on the size of the roots, it may take a lot of force, so it is not the best method for elderly people.

If you see that you cannot pull them, dig a little more and be careful when pulling, always keep your feet firmly on the ground and your center of gravity low to avoid falling.

Cutting them down

If the thorn bushes are not too large, you may be able to cut them down with a pair of pruning shears or a saw. Make sure you use sharp, high-quality tools so you don’t have to work too hard.

The downside of this method is that it will not kill the bush, but you can still drastically reduce its size.

Using herbicides

I’m usually not a fan of herbicides. As you probably know, they can harm the environment and the many species of animals that populate our garden.

However, if there’s a big bush you wanna get rid of, it may be the easiest and most convenient method.

There are a variety of herbicides that can be used to kill weeds and thorn bushes. Roundup is a popular choice, but there are many other options available. Just ask for the best one at your favorite garden center.

Before you use your product, pay particular attention to the labels and instructions to ensure you use it in the correct way. If you’ve never used it, have a look at my guide on how to spray fungicide, they often work the same way.

Burning them

Another very quick method is to set it on fire. This works especially well if some parts of the bush are dry.

You will need to build a fire around the bush’s base and let it burn until it is completely consumed. This is probably the most extreme method, but it can be effective.

Please be very careful; this approach should only be used in some extreme cases (for example, when thorny bushes are many and difficult to eradicate). In addition, be mindful that all around there are no other plants or flammable objects.

Hiring a professional

If you see that the situation is more complicated than expected, it might be a good idea to hire a professional.

Sometimes removal can be quite difficult and not recommended for inexperienced people. A professional will have all the necessary tools and will clean up your garden very quickly.

Things you need to watch out for

As I said earlier, removing thorn bushes can be risky, even if you have the correct tools and equipment. Here are a few tips to help you avoid being pricked by the thorns.

Always Wear Gloves

This is probably the most important advice I can give you. Thorn bushes have sharp thorns that can easily puncture your skin. Protecting your hands from these hazards will be easier with gloves.

Unfortunately, thorns can also introduce bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens into the body, leading to infections. If you are pricked by a thorn, wash the wound thoroughly with antibacterial soap and water. If you notice signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or pain, it’s important to seek medical attention.

Cover your arms and legs

An additional layer of protection is also essential for your arms and legs. Before removing thorn bushes, wear long sleeves and long pants (preferably of thick fabric), which will help protect our skin from sharp thorns.

And of course, wear proper gardening footwear designed for working on soil, and never wear open-toed shoes.

Be careful

The last piece of advice I can give you is simply to be careful and ask for help if needed. Thorn bushes are unpredictable; some of them are very invasive, and there’s a good chance that they will eventually spread to other areas. Some of them can have deep roots and be challenging to remove.

As I always say, with gardening, your safety should be your top priority. Just hire an expert if you aren’t confident with the job. Any money spent is nothing compared to our health and safety.
